Shakespeare for Schools

Our children had the opportunity to perform their version of Hamlet twice this week for the children, staff and parents of both Thurlby and Bourne Westfield.  The audience at both schools were all very impressed by our super star actors. We could not be prouder of them!

The whole project has been an amazing experience, watching our children flourish as the weeks of rehearsals progressed. It was a fabulous opportunity for Thurlby and Bourne Westfield to work together in a collaborative ensemble piece and we were very lucky to have had such fantastic financial support from Tesco.

We really hope that by showcasing the performance to our school, our upper Key Stage 2 children will be keen to join up next year. It is such a great opportunity for children to learn new skills, build new friendships, harbour creative talents and grow in confidence.

Talk on Teeth

This week, as part of our work on the Digestive System, Mrs Ogden (School Governor and Dentist) visited Year 4 to teach the children about the different types of teeth humans have and their different functions.

Mrs Ogden also explained the importance of tooth care and how this should be carried out to prevent tooth decay. The class had prepared many thoughtful scientific questions which were answered during the talk. Mrs Ogden gave the children a small tube of toothpaste and a tooth brushing chart to support good tooth care at home. Many thanks to Mrs Ogden for giving her time – the learning is always more meaningful when delivered by an expert.

Remembrance Service - Year 6

On Monday, Year 6 went to St Firmin’s Church for a Remembrance Service. Each child was given a cross with the name of a soldier, who was originally from Thurlby. This cross was put into the ground as a memorial.  After, we were then given the opportunity to spend some time in the church and look through folders of each of the soldiers who had been remembered in the service. It was a very thought provoking morning. We have since explored each soldier further in our History lesson and have created fact files of the soldier that we had on our crosses. It has been a fascinating experience learning and exploring about those who lived in the village and fought for our country many years ago.

Name the Skeleton Competition

Due to a grant provided by the Edina Trust, we have recently purchased a model of a full size adult skeleton to support learning in science.  Unfortunately, as well as having no body, our skeleton has no name! We are therefore running a competition to name the skeleton.

Children wishing to enter must complete the entry forms sent out via parentmail today. There are spare copies of the competition forms in the letter rack adjacent to the School Office, if required. For your child's skeleton name to be considered:-

Foundation Stage -  your child must have coloured in the picture

Key Stage 1 - your child must have correctly answered at least 2 of the questions

Key Stage 2 - your child must have correctly answered at least 4 of the questions

Class teachers will choose 3 successful and imaginative entries from their own class; these will then be considered by our School Council who will make the final choice for the skeleton’s name. The closing date is Halloween, 31st October but if your child is attending the residential trip, please hand in the competition entry form by Friday 19th October! The winner will receive a 'Dinosaur Fossils Digging Kit'.

We hope you will support your child in researching the answers to the quiz and in suggesting a suitable skeleton name however taking part is entirely optional.

On Tuesday 22nd November, Mrs Sewell and Miss Wilson took twenty Y5/6 pupils to a football tournament in Spalding to compete against other local schools.

The Year 6 team had a fabulous morning of football with one draw and two wins. Unfortunately, this led to a Golden Goal moment and Baston got the win which put our A team into the group with other second place teams. The afternoon led to three more wins and the Year 6 pupils came 4th place overall.

Our Year 5 B team also did very well and were placed into first position in their morning pool. The afternoon saw some tough matches but they played some excellent football and came 2nd place overall.

Well done to all of our footballers.

Year 6 Football Tournament - Bourne Westfield School

Our Year 6 football team attended the Bourne Westfield Tournament today. The team played a total of 4 matches winning their first 2 games and drawing in their 3rd match:

Thurlby v Bourne Westfield Primary 2-0 (Freddie Renton, Sophia Bull)

Thurlby v Morton Primary 4-0 (Mitchell Cooper, Freddie Renton, Thomas Fowkes x2).

Thurlby v Bourne Abbey Primary 0-0

Thurlby’s super efforts secured them a place in a hard fought final. Unfortunately a nil result, after extra term, meant a penalty shootout. The children huddled together for support, showing great team ethics and sportsmanship. Westfield took the first penalty, Freddie Gray in goal,  watched the ball blaze over the bar. Up stepped Nic Morgan to take Thurlby’s penalty and powered home his effort resulting in a Thurlby School win.

Every player played their part in an excellent tournament, a real team effort from everyone. Well done Thurlby we are very proud of you!!

Checkmate! School Chess Club Children Battle England Seniors International Chess Player in Fourteen Simultaneous Games

On Wednesday 29 April, 14 of our Year 4/5 children from the school’s Chess Club threw down a challenge to visitor Chris Fegan, Chief Operating Officer of the charity Chess in Schools and Communities (CSC) – play fourteen v one! As a member of England’s Seniors International chess team, Chris was happy to do battle.

The children sat around a table encircling him as he moved swiftly from one board to the next. After Chris made his play against one child and moved on to the next game, each child had some time to think of their response. However, as Chris’ calls of “Checkmate” saw players gradually defeated one by one, the pace of play really began to heat up. Eventually, nearly all the Chess Club players succumbed, but young Charlie Webster held Chris to a draw! Nevertheless, all the children enjoyed themselves – as Reece Bairsto commented, “Just to see an England ‘champion’ standing in front of me was amazing, and even though I was in Check five times I still had fun”.

Chris Fegan summed up the games with, “They all played really well and it was a great pleasure to visit the school and play the children. They’ve all got a good grasp of chess and it was hard work against them - I am sure they will all go from strength to strength in the game and they did themselves, the school and the county of Lincolnshire very proud."

Y3 Ancient Greece - Curriculum Day
Y3 enjoyed a day of exciting activities based upon Ancient Greece to enhance their learning. The pupils were involved in a min-Olympic games where they competed in discuss, javelin and jumping events.  The children with the longest jumps and throws won their very own bronze, silver or gold medal! The morning also consisted of clay modelling where the children produced their own Greek pot or oil lamp. There was even time for food tasting, with feta cheese, olives and pitta bread being just some of the items on offer. In the afternoon, the pupils made their own Trojan horse using just paper and straws. The day was thoroughly enjoyed by all!

Year 5 Class Assembly
Year 5 enjoyed sharing their knowledge of World War 2 during their class assembly. The children also showed the gas masks and models of Anderson shelters which they have been creating. Jump Rope sequences performed to music from the 1940s entertained the audience too. Well done, Year Five.

World Book Day

As a school, we celebrated World Book Day in the following ways:

Classroom Activities The children took part in lots of book related activities during the day from retelling stories to writing book reviews.

‘My favourite book’ paired reading Additionally, children brought their favourite book to school and everyone was given a chance to talk about it in their class. Pupils also had the opportunity to read their favourite book from home with a child from another class. Both the teachers and children really enjoyed this activity! It was lovely to see the children working so nicely together and they should feel very proud of themselves.
